State-of-the-art AI processing with deep learning uses detailed information about human forms and poses to dramatically improve the camera’s subject recognition accuracy and make full use of its potential resolution. AI subject recognition has been expanded to include a number of new subject types, including vehicles and insects.
A new level of resolution:
This newest generation of the a7R series continues the pursuit of high image resolution, delivering the highest resolution at low sensitivity in the series thus far. The 35 mm full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R™ CMOS image sensor with 61.0 million pixels and the latest BIONZ XR™ image processing engine are used to their fullest potential to deliver extraordinary resolution and fine subject detail.

The entire image stabilization system has been updated with a high-precision image stabilization unit, advanced gyro sensors and optimized image stabilization algorithms. Camera shake is precisely detected and corrected by the image stabilization unit, significantly expanding the range of shooting situations in which reliable stabilization can be achieved. The body alone provides 8-step stabilization* for the first time in the a series.

Pixel Shift Multi Shooting responds to changing conditions:
Pixel Shift Multi Shooting takes advantage of precision in-body image stabilization system control, capturing up to 16 pixel-shifted shots to be later composited on a computer to achieve outstanding resolution in a single image*. With the latest version of Imaging Edge Desktop™ software, small pixel-level movements are automatically detected and corrected**.
* Image size after compositing is approx. 60.2 million (9504 x 6336) pixels for 4-image shots, and approx. 240.8 million pixels (19008 x 12672) for 16-image shots.

Selectable RAW image sizes and quality:
Lossless RAW image compression allows more high-quality images to be shot in continuous bursts, with a choice of three lossless-compression image sizes. The M and S sizes have the same number of pixels (26M/15M) whether shot in full-frame or APS-C mode, making it possible to seamlessly switch between full frame and APS-C angles of view within the same scene while maintaining the same image resolution.
Precise, versatile external flash control:
When a compatible Sony external flash unit (Sold Separately) is used with the camera’s auto white balance function, the white balance is adjusted to produce natural skin tones on faces based on the balance between the flash output and ambient light. Flash control also works with face detection to deliver the optimum flash level for the subject.
Real-time Recognition AF for human:
With its innovative AI processing unit, the a7R V can use Real-time Recognition AF to accurately recognize movements of people, providing an approximately 60% improvement in human eye recognition* compared to the a7R IV. Human pose estimation technology uses learned human forms and poses to recognize not just eyes but body and head position with high precision, making it possible to lock onto and track a subject facing away from the camera or wearing a mask.

Faster, more precise AF system:
The immense processing power of the new BIONZ XR engine and updated algorithms achieve notably improved AF performance, drawing on the huge amount of data generated by the image sensor and the wide-area, high-density AF system. Up to 693 phase detection points cover approximately 79% of the image area. The wider AF area also allows greater framing freedom, for example when shooting portraits in vertical orientation. High AF precision is achieved down to light levels as low as EV –4.0 in AF-S mode (ISO 100 equivalent, F2.0 lens).
Real-time Recognition AF for wider range of subjects:
In addition to humans, animals and birds, the camera can now recognize insects, cars, trains and airplanes, providing even greater flexibility and reliability when shooting both stills and movies. More types of birds are recognized, and animal recognition has been expanded to cover some grazing and small animals in addition to dogs, cats and similarly featured animals, with up to 40% greater precision.
Continuous shooting:
Even with the high resolution of the a7R V, continuous shooting at up to 10fps with full AF/AE tracking is possible with the mechanical shutter. This level of speed and tracking reliability makes it easy to capture the most photogenic moments and expressions with moving subjects. Up to 583 compressed RAW images can be continuously shot at 10fps.
Full-time DMF:
When shooting stills with AF-C or AF-S autofocus, the lens’s focus ring can be rotated to switch to manual focus mode at any time. This makes it easy to return focus to the original subject if AF switches to a different subject, for example, by simply rotating the focus ring.
Focus bracketing*:
The a7R V will automatically shoot up to 299 images with sequentially shifted focus points using intervals and a sequence that you specify. The best image can then be selected from the sequence, or a computer application can combine the focus bracketed images to create focus-stacked composites with deeply synthesized depth of field that take advantage of the camera’s high resolution.

Full-pixel readout for 8K movies with incredible resolution:
The XAVC HS format enables in-camera recording of high-resolution 8K 24p (25p)* movies with efficient HEVC/H.265 compression, bringing out the very best in Sony’s lenses and taking full advantage of the potential resolution provided by the sensor and full-pixel readout. Even the finest subject details are faithfully captured. The ability to reframe 8K footage in post-production for 4K delivery affords invaluable editing flexibility as well**.

Outstanding 4K movie recording:
Full-frame and Super 35 mm formats can be selected for 4K movie recording, as can 4K 60p (50p)*recording. Full pixel readout in the Super 35 mm mode without the need for pixel binning makes 2.6x oversampling possible for 4K movies. The XAVC S-I (All-Intra), or the XAVC HS format is supported, as is 10-bit 4:2:2 colour sampling.

16-bit RAW output for enhanced editing flexibility*:
In response to the increasing demand for RAW recording capability, the a7R V provides 16-bit RAW output to an external recorder** via an HDMI cable. Full-frame 3848 x 2168 (16:9 aspect ratio) output is available with a choice of frame rates***. It is also possible to output RAW via HDMI while recording XAVC HS 4K, XAVC S 4K or XAVC S-I 4K to internal card media. Proxy recording is also available.
* A premium high-speed HDMI cable (sold separately) is recommended for RAW output. Gamma is fixed at S-Log3 during RAW output.

Real-time Tracking for movies:
Thanks to substantial improvements in subject recognition, the camera can provide more reliable Real-time Tracking, keeping track of specified subjects with precise focus, including focus on the subject’s eyes. Subject recognition is now enabled for movie shoots as well as still-image photography, for fast, stable focus when shooting. Even with subject recognition OFF, touch operation allows subjects to be acquired and tracked based on colour, pattern (luminance) and distance (depth).
S-Log3 gamma curve with 14+ stops of latitude:
The S-Log3 gamma curve emphasizes gradation characteristics from shadows to mid-grey (18% grey), achieving up to 14+ stops of latitude. Three colour gamut settings are provided: S-Gamut, S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut3.Cine. These advanced settings make it easy to match footage shot on the a7R V with footage shot on VENICE and VENICE 2 digital cinema cameras or FX series cameras equipped with S-Log3 gamma curve settings, for smooth, efficient editing.
Active Mode image stabilization for handheld movie shooting :
Active Mode* provides strong image stabilization for handheld movie shooting. In addition to in-body stabilization, compatible lenses with their own built-in image stabilization coordinate with the camera body for highly effective control, allowing even handheld telephoto shots.
* Slight image crop in Active Mode. Active mode not available when recording XAVC HS 8K or using a frame rate of at 120 (100) fps.
Designed for smooth movie making:
Focus Map* makes it easier to visualize depth of field when shooting movies. In addition, a bold, clearly visible red frame appears on screen when recording is in progress. Shot Marks can be added to recorded movie clips in-camera to identify particular scenes.
* The Focus Map function cannot be used in the following conditions: when shooting stills, when the Focus Magnifier function is in use, when using digital zoom, during USB streaming, when no lens is mounted, when an A-mount lens is mounted or when using the SEL16F28. For other lenses, please use the latest software.
Unique 4-axis LCD monitor for enhanced shooting flexibility:
Sony’s newly developed 4-axis multi-angle monitor combines the utility of a conventional tilting monitor with side-opening vari-angle flexibility. It allows greater flexibility in shooting by providing unrestricted angle adjustment in both horizontal and vertical orientations*.
* Monitor movement may be limited when cables are connected to the camera’s connectors. Do not apply excessive force when opening or rotating the monitor.
Touch operations when shooting or during playback:
The Touch Focus, Touch Tracking and Touch Shutter functions can be quickly activated or deactivated by touching an icon on the shooting display. During playback, images can be selected by touch, and pinch-out/pinch-in gestures can be used to enlarge or reduce the selected image. Touch sensitivity can be adjusted for optimum control response.
Fast Wi-Fi for PC tethering, FTP and smartphone transfers:
Built-in Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac) allows communication on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz* bands. 802.11ac provides 2x2 MIMO support for fast and stable data transfer and reliable communication.

PC Remote shooting via wireless LAN (Wi-Fi):
The camera can be connected to a computer via Wi-Fi for wireless PC Remote (tethered) shooting using the “Remote” function of Sony’s latest Imaging Edge Desktop application, giving the user greater freedom of movement on location or in the studio. 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz* Wi-Fi bands can be selected as required. In addition to wirelessly connecting the camera directly to the PC, the ability to connect via a wireless access point adds the flexibility needed to work in a variety of network environments.

Effective heat dissipation for extended recording times:
Heat generated by the image sensor, image processor and AI processing unit is effectively dissipated to prevent overheating. One element of this is the graphite material formed into a unique S (sigma) shape and built into the image stabilization unit. This structure allows the image sensor, a major source of heat inside the body, to move freely during stabilization while effectively conducting heat away, achieving five times better heat dissipation.
Durable magnesium alloy chassis, reliable mechanical shutter:
A lightweight, high-rigidity magnesium alloy is used for the top cover, front cover, internal frame and rear cover, with durable construction that keeps the camera operating smoothly in hard working environments. A shutter unit with a fast-response motor minimizes mechanical shutter vibration that can cause blur, while allowing high-speed continuous shooting at up to 10fps. The shutter is quiet and has been tested for durability in excess of 500,000 shutter cycles.
QXGA viewfinder with the highest resolution in its class:
A 9.44-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder delivers the highest resolution, with approximately 1.6 times the resolution of previous UXGA Tru-Finder™ viewfinders. It also features significantly improved optics and mechanical design, achieving world-record 0.90x viewfinder magnification, and a 41 ° diagonal FOV (approx. 43 ° for the entire display area).
Two CFexpress Type A-compatible media slots:
The a7R V has two media slots that support CFexpress Type A memory cards as well as UHS-I and UHS-II SDXC/SDHC, for high capacity and fast read/write speeds. The same data can be simultaneously recorded to both slots for backup, or the user can choose to separate stills/movies or JPEG (HEIF)/RAW formats. There is also a relay mode in which still image or movie recording will automatically switch to the second media card.
USB PD (Power Delivery) supports fast charging:
The a7R V supports USB PD (Power Delivery), allowing higher power to be supplied from an external source. A USB charger or mobile battery that supports USB PD can be connected to the camera’s USB Type-C® port, supplying power or charging the internal battery at three to four times the rate of the previous model.
Recycled materials:
Sony is working toward the use of non-plastic packaging materials, with plant-based non-woven fabrics as well as recyclable materials. As for the camera itself, no non-recyclable resources are used in our SORPLAS™ material*, which is repeatedly recyclable, durable and high in quality. Recyclable plastics are also used as much as possible*, reducing stress on the environment without compromising performance or functionality in any way.

Lens-ring AF subject selection:
When the AF Assist function is ON, rotating the focus ring instantly switches from autofocus to manual focus so that a different subject can be quickly selected. The face selection algorithm has also been improved so that the focus ring can be used to quickly and intuitively select specific individuals from within a group when shooting with Real-time Eye AF or Face Detection. Autofocus operation resumes as soon as the user stops rotating the lens focus ring, and the last subject selected by the focus ring is automatically tracked.
Proxy recording for more efficient editing workflow:
When capturing higher bitrate formats such as XAVC-I 4K, low bit-rate HD proxy files can be recorded simultaneously. In response to feedback from working professional, the dust and moisture resistance14 of FX6 have been dramatically improved when compared to FS5 II, thanks to refinements throughout the body. Additional sealing is applied to the media compartment lid, terminal cover and all joints in the chassis. Routes to dust and moisture entry have been re-examined to ensure reliable operation in challenging environments. Even though the dust and moisture resistance and therefore reliability have been significantly improved, the body dimensions remain compact.

A choice of battery types for different applications:
FX6 is compatible with BP-U series battery packs. The BP-U35 (supplied), BP-U70, BP-U100t or BP-U60T can be selected according to shooting needs. The BP-U35, for example, is an ideal choice to make most of the camera's mobility when it is to be used handheld. The BP-U100, on the other hand, can provide extended recording time when the FX6 is to be mounted on a tripod or other support. Lens-ring AF subject selection:
When the AF Assist function is ON, rotating the focus ring instantly switches from autofocus to manual focus so that a different subject can be quickly selected. The face selection algorithm has also been improved so that the focus ring can be used to quickly and intuitively select specific individuals from within a group when shooting with Real-time Eye AF or Face Detection. Autofocus operation resumes as soon as the user stops rotating the lens focus ring, and the last subject selected by the focus ring is automatically tracked.
Proxy recording for more efficient editing workflow:
When capturing higher bitrate formats such as XAVC-I 4K, low bit-rate HD proxy files can be recorded simultaneously. These smaller proxy files can then be used for editing and previewing prior to final production delivery which reduces computer load and allows faster and more efficient workflows. Proxy files are captured in 8-bit XAVC-L (1920x1080) 9Mbps MP4 wrapper. Proxy files cannot be captured during 16-bit RAW output8.
Reliable durability and weather resistance:
In response to feedback from working professional, the dust and moisture resistance14 of FX6 have been dramatically improved when compared to FS5 II, thanks to refinements throughout the body. Additional sealing is applied to the media compartment lid, terminal cover and all joints in the chassis. Routes to dust and moisture entry have been re-examined to ensure reliable operation in challenging environments. Even though the dust and moisture resistance and therefore reliability have been significantly improved, the body dimensions remain compact.

A choice of battery types for different applications:
FX6 is compatible with BP-U series battery packs. The BP-U35 (supplied), BP-U70, BP-U100t or BP-U60T can be selected according to shooting needs. The BP-U35, for example, is an ideal choice to make most of the camera's mobility when it is to be used handheld. The BP-U100, on the other hand, can provide extended recording time when the FX6 is to be mounted on a tripod or other support. Simple live solution:
Sony had a game-changing idea: enable a single operator to run a multi-camera live production. The result was a robust, cost-effective switcher, the MCX-500 multi camera live producer and the companion RM-30BP remote control. In this system, a Tally indicator will automatically appear on each camera's LCD panel and viewfinder. A red icon indicates when the shot is live (PGM) while Green indicates preview mode (NEXT). The MCX-500 supports mixing between eight video sources, four stereo embedded audio channels plus two XLR Inputs, and a dedicated Title Input. There are both internal recording and live streaming via Ustream, Facebook Live and YouTube Live. (Facebook Live and YouTube Live require V2.0 firmware.)

Dual Base ISO for cleaner images in low light:
The Dual Base ISO feature provides two Base ISO settings; one at ISO 800 and one at ISO 2500. For full-scale productions, the S-Log3 gamma curve provided in the FX30 has been designed for smooth gradations, and to make it easier to achieve cinematic image quality when colour grading in post-production. Both S-Log3 and S-Gamut3.Cine offer high-quality colour reproduction over a wide latitude, and special care has been taken to adjust the camera’s output to ensure that the highest image quality can be easily achieved during post processing.
New Log shooting modes for optimized image quality:
Three modes are provided for recording with the S-Log3 gamma curve. Cine EI*12, used in Sony’s high-end Cinema Line models, offers wide latitude and the highest possible image quality. Cine EI Quick*12 simplifies setup by automatically switching the camera’s Base ISO according to the selected Exposure Index (EI). And Flexible ISO provides the greatest flexibility for exposure settings. In addition, Sony’s s709 has been added to the available LUT presets.

When recording with the S-Log3 gamma curve, the low-contrast image on the monitor can make it difficult to judge what the final image will look like. For a more accurate preview, the FX30 allows customizable LUTs to be applied to the LCD monitor preview and HDMI output, and also embedded in clips to facilitate post-production processing*13. In addition to the preset LUTs, up to 16 user LUTs can be imported into the camera via memory card*14.

Sophisticated tracking features keep your subject in steady focus so you can concentrate on composition. Wide-area AF, with intelligent tracking, uses focal-plane phase-detection for tenacious subject tracking across almost the entire frame. Real-time Eye AF ensures precise focus on the face and eyes (for humans, birds and animals*15, while Real-time Tracking provides reliable tracking based on Sony’s unique, AI-based subject recognition.

Sophisticated focus functions to handle any situation:
The FX30 makes fast, accurate focusing as easy as possible. AF Assist*16 smoothly switches between auto and manual focus, it enables easy rack focusing, and it can save time even when you are primarily using manual focus. Focus Map*17 makes it easy to visualize depth of field while shooting, and Breathing Compensation*18 provides a stable angle of view when rack focusing by minimizing the field-of-view shift that can occur with some lenses.

The FX30 provides 4K recording at up to 120 frames per second*19. Extraordinarily smooth 5x (max.) slow-motion imagery*20 with autofocus provides new expressive capability, opening a whole new world of creative potential.

Active Mode image stabilization supports handheld movie shooting:
Active Mode*21 is an optical in-body 5-axis image stabilization mode that provides increased stabilization for movie shooting. A precision gyroscope sensor accurately measures camera shake and compensates optically, making stable video possible even when shooting hand-held without a gimbal, while walking, and at 4K resolution.

Metadata to facilitate editing with Catalyst:

The camera records five types of metadata: LUTs, image stabilization, breathing, camera rotation and shot marks. These can be useful when previewing and preparing to edit in Sony’s free Catalyst Browse or purchased Catalyst Prepare software*22.

Proxy recording for efficient editing workflow:
Low-bitrate HD proxy files can be recorded simultaneously in nearly all recording formats. The smaller proxy video files can be used for editing previews prior to final 4K online editing, reducing computer load and enabling a faster workflow*23.

Because the FX30 can shoot stills as well as movies, it can be handy to use when you are location hunting. For example, you can use it to shoot stills that will be used in storyboards or pre-production presentations.
Multi-thread body makes a cage unnecessary:
Designed for mobility and efficiency, the body of the FX30 features five thread holes (1/4-20 UNC) for accessories, making a cage unnecessary. While providing ample capacity for accessory attachment, the fact that no cage is required contributes to reduced system size and weight for easier handheld shooting. The XLR handle unit*24 provides three additional thread holes so that accessories and add-ons can be stably and securely attached.

New Main menu for quick access to frequently used items:
The camera’s new list-style main menu gives you access to frame rate*25, shutter speed and other essential shooting parameters. Main menu display can be assigned to a custom button so that parameters can be quickly checked and edited as needed prior to shooting.

Movie standby screen:
The layout of the information and icon overlay that appears in standby mode has been optimized for movie recording so you can concentrate more fully on composition and framing. Only the most essential items are displayed in the black bands above and below the image area.
Tally lamps:
Recording (tally) lamps are provided on the upper front and rear of the camera. The REC button on the top of the camera is also illuminated and linked to the rear recording lamp. To make it clear when the camera is in record mode, a red frame appears on the monitor display so that the operator can easily confirm that recording is in progress.
Flexible, high-resolution touch-panel LCD monitor:
The FX30 features a side-opening vari-angle rear monitor that allows broad positioning and framing freedom for gimbal-mounted shots, handheld shots, very low ground-level shots, or whatever the shoot requires. The large 3.0 type 2.36 million-dot*26 touch-panel LCD monitor provides clear viewing in bright outdoor settings. The function (Fn) menu can be displayed by swiping up on the monitor, for quick access to frequently used assigned functions.

Vertical aspect markers:
With the proliferation of smartphones and social media, creators are producing imagery with a variety of aspect ratios and orientations, with vertical orientation becoming more common. The FX30 offers a number of aspect markers that can be used to check framing while shooting in standard horizontal orientation. Aspect markers that are useful when shooting social media ads and vertical movies are included.
XLR connectors for high-quality external audio input:
The XLR handle unit*24 provides two XLR audio inputs to facilitate high-quality audio recording. With an optional XLR microphone, digital audio data can be transferred directly to the camera for outstanding audio quality without noise or signal degradation. There is also a 3.5 mm stereo mini jack for 4-channel recording, for compatibility with 2-channel and 4-channel audio formats.

Broad connectivity for a wide range of shooting needs:
An HDMI Type-A connector can be used to feed 4K, 16-bit RAW*27, or other movie formats to an external recorder or display device, with the option of status overlays included in the HDMI output. Other connectors include USB Type-C® , Multi/Micro-USB, mic, headphone and a Multi Interface (MI) Shoe with built-in digital audio interface. The FX30 also supports UVC (USB Video Class) and UAC (USB Audio Class) standards and can serve as a high-performance streaming camera or webcam.
16-bit RAW output via HDMI:
For demanding post-production workflows, 16-bit RAW output*27 is available over an HDMI connection to compatible external recorders*28. Two CFexpress Type A-compatible media slots:
The camera’s two media slots are compatible with CFexpress Type A cards as well as SDXC/SDHC cards supporting UHS-I and UHS-II speed classes. CFexpress Type A cards are the next standard for compact storage with fast write/read speeds suitable for 4K movie recording at high bitrates. Dual slots enable either relay or simultaneous recording.
Uninterrupted 4K 60p recording:
For uninterrupted 4K 60p recording*31, the FX30 features an innovative heat dissipation structure, including a unique Sony S (sigma) shaped graphite-alloy heatsink. A complete internal redesign optimized the camera’s airflow and heatsink placement. When required, a silent*32 cooling fan provides ventilation for continuous recording at full resolution, with intake and exhaust air structurally isolated to maintain strong dust and moisture resistance.

XAVC technology is based on the H.264 standard, which provides an exceptional performance compression technology
XAVC Intra (frame) compression means that every frame is encoded independent of the other frames - providing a better quality picture, without compromises
With a Long GOP codec, only certain frames are encoded individually
This allows the codec to squeeze the video into a much smaller bitrate than Intra technology
The main benefit is faster ingest and editing
XAVC Long GOP files also require less storage space than XAVC Intra files, providing budget savings on recording media

In file transfer mode, high-resolution files and XAVC Proxy files can be transferred over wireless connection to cloud or FTP server thanks to Content Browser Mobile* (CBM) application. In "Push" mode, the CBM application enables users to monitor the currently shot video and to wirelessly control camcorder settings such as focus, zoom, iris, white balance, REC START/STOP, and more. With Content Browser Mobile V2.0 proxy trim, proxy partial clip upload, and logging are available. In "streaming" mode, high quality live streaming is provided by the advanced Sony QoS technology embedded in the camcorder and in the PWS-100RX1 network RX station .Non QoS live streaming is also possible with a third-party receiver or VLC player.

Flexible camera system operation:
The CA-FB70 Optical Fiber Camera Adaptor or the CA-TX70 Digital Triax Camera Adaptor can be attached to the PXW-X400 for live camera operation. The CA-FB70 enables the PXW-X400 to transmit signals via an optical fibre cable up to 250 m between the CA-FB70 and HXCU-FB70 Optical Fibre Camera Control Unit (CCU) with power and signal transmission. The CA-TX70 transmits signals via triax cable up to 600 m* between the CA-TX70 and HXCU-TX70 Digital Triax Camera Control Unit.
